Physical Education

The PE department aim to present a carefully planned programme of activities based on the needs of all children ensuring that pupils have equal opportunity to achieve the objectives set out in the National Curriculum.

Aims and objectives

In physical education we aim to ensure that all students:

  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities
  • Lead healthy, active lives

Objectives

  • Offer a broad curriculum that is designed with the students at its centre
  • Provide the opportunity to adapt the curriculum to suit the requirements of teaching groups
  • Provide a wide range of extra-curricular activities to further enhance the participation and development of students in a variety of sports
  • Provide a wide range of Intra school competitive experiences through the InterCollege programme of sport
  • Provide a wide range of Inter school competitive opportunities with the opportunity of representative sport at all levels

KS3

  • Students are taught in single sex classes
  • Students have 2 x 1-hour lessons per week
  • Students are taught in mixed ability classes
  • In Years 7, 8 & 9 students do 6-week blocks of an activity, covering 6 activities over the year.

KS4

Core PE

  • Students are taught in half-year groups, which are determined, by maths groups X and Y with approximately 60 boys and girls in each half
  • Students are offered the choice of following a Practical Sports  route, or a Sports Leaders route
  • The Practical Sports route involves the selection of a variety of different sporting activities undertaken.
  • The Sports Leaders route involves a combination of different accredited courses to include First Aid, Level 1 Sports Leaders, Child Protection, Sport Activator
  • Off-site activities are included in the delivery of KS4 core PE

GCSE PE

  • Students who have chosen GCSE PE as an Option, have 3 lessons per week; 2 practical and 1 theory
  • Practical lessons will be taught in 8 week blocks with an assessment at the end
  • The coursework element (12%) will be delivered as a controlled assessment in school

GCSE DANCE

  • Students who have chosen GCSE Dance as an Option, have 3 lessons per week, with the vast majority of lessons being practical.
  • Students study a range of different styles of Dance, as well as the choreography of group and individual dances
  • Students get extra tuition from the “Step Into Dance” company
  • Students also get the opportunity to perform at local and regional events including an annual event at Sadlers Wells.
