Studying with the highly successful Geography team at Fortismere, students are motivated and engaged to investigate geographical issues from a local to a global scale. Students are facilitated to assess the world's major global issues as well as learning about key processes and characteristics of the physical, social and economic environment.  Students enjoy the variety of studying through a range of experiences such as: thought provoking discussion; enquiry based learning; independent research; role play; field work; ICT; and media facilities.

Success in the Department has led to an increase in the number of students opting to take Geography at GCSE and A level, with growing numbers choosing to study it at University.  Popular field trips bring reality and enrichment to the course, from local day trips to Kew Gardens (as part of our study of global ecosystems) and Walton-on-the-Naze (as part of our study of coastal processes and erosion), to residential field trips in Years 10 and 12.

With an ever changing world and the increasing significance of the 'global village' Geography plays a very strong part in the academic and social development of students here at Fortismere.


In Year 7 students study Global Issues; Australia; Coasts; Weather and Climate; Map Skills and the Local Area.

In Year 8 students study Brazil; Rivers; Only One Earth; Energy and Climate Change.

In Year 9 students study Natural Hazards, Population and Settlement; Development and Tourism; and Climatic Hazards.


Students follow the OCR B syllabus. The GCSE course consists of four themes: Rivers and Coasts; Population and Settlement; Natural Hazards; and Economic Development.

The assessment components of the GCSE are as follows:
25% Sustainable Decision-Making Exam
50% Key Geographical Themes Exam
25% Two pieces of Coursework (one based on primary data collection and the second, a piece of independent research)
To carry out the primary data collection and bring class work to life we go on a 3 day residential field trip to Sheringham in Norfolk.

Post 16

Students follow the Edexcel Specification. The AS course consists of the following: 

  • Unit 1 - Global Challenges - Topic 1 - World at Risk and Topic 2 - Going Global
  • Unit 2 - Geographical Investigations Topic 1 - Extreme Weather and Topic 2 - Rebranding Places

The A2 course consists of the following:

  • Unit 3 - Contested Planet - Energy Security, Water Conflicts, Biodiversity under Threat, Superpower Geographies, Bridging the Development Gap and the Technological Fix
  • Unit 4 - Geographical Investigations - A choice of topics either: Life on the margins - the Food Supply problem or Pollution and Human Health Risk.

As part of the AS Unit 3 students go on a 5 day residential field trip to Malham, Yorkshire.

Extra Curricular

As well as the field trips mentioned above the Department is always looking at ways to further the geographical enrichment of students. Opportunities for students to listen to outside speakers and get involved in International and Sustainability groups are frequent.
