The Fortismere Sixth Form Bridging Work is designed to help you ‘bridge’ the gap between GCSE and Sixth Form study. It will support your transition by keeping key skills fresh, introducing new concepts, and helping you begin Year 12 with confidence and focus.

In some subjects, the work will build on your GCSE knowledge. In others, it will introduce material that forms the foundation of your Sixth Form courses. It is also an opportunity to develop qualities that are central to success in the Sixth Form: independence, organisation, and curiosity.

Each subject has set 5–6 hours of core work, which you are required to complete and bring with you to your first lessons in September. Teachers will either collect this work in or expect you to be able to discuss it in depth in your first lessons of the year, so it should be completed to a high standard and brought to every class.

In addition, each subject offers a selection of optional extension activities, for example articles to read, documentaries to watch, places to visit, or creative challenges to try. While not compulsory, these are a chance to stretch yourself, deepen your interest, and develop the habits of a successful Sixth Form learner. We would expect most students to engage with an additional 3–5 hours per subject based on these.

Finally, you will find in each subject’s bridging work information about the equipment you will need from the start of term, such as folders, dividers and other organisational tools. These must be in place for your first lesson to ensure you begin with the right habits and resources in place.
