P.E.

Aims and Objectives

The P.E. Department aim to present a carefully planned and skilfully presented programme of activities based on the needs of all children ensuring that all pupils have equal opportunity to achieve the objectives set out in the syllabus.

All pupils will be encouraged to continually seek to raise their levels of attainment and to maintain high standards in areas of learning, behaviour, organisation, and preparation and inter personal skills.

In physical education we aim to:

  • develop physical competence
  • promote physical development
  • teach pupils, through experience, to know about and value the benefits of exercise
  • establish self esteem through the development of physical confidence
  • develop artistic and aesthetic understanding within and through movement
  • help pupils to cope with both success and failure in the context of co-operative and competitive physical activities
  • provide experience of physical activities which should lead pupils to lifelong participation

We also aim to contribute to:

  • the development of problem solving skills
  • the development of inter personal skills
  • the forging of links between the school and the community and across culture

- To develop a basic vocabulary of skills

In June 2003 Fortismere was awarded the Sportsmark award by Sport England in recognition of the work and achievement of the staff and pupils.


Key Stage 3

Physical Education - Girls

Year 7

Year 7 students have 2 Physical Education lessons each week; 1 indoor lesson and 1 outdoor lesson in the Autumn and Spring terms.

Autumn Term & Spring Term

Activities will be split into 3 eight week blocks. There will be 2 weeks of cross country before the intercolour cross country event.

Summer Term:
- first 1/2 term: Rounders and Athletics
- second 1/2 term: Swimming and Athletics( 2 weeks tennis coach)

Year 8

Year 8 students have 2 Physical Education lessons in one week and one lesson in the other week therefore the indoor/outdoor lesson has to be alternated.

Autumn Term:
- first 1/2 term: Football and Basketball
- second 1/2 term: HRF and Netball

Spring Term:
- first 1/2 term: Hockey and Gymnastics
- second 1/2 term: Hockey and Gymnastics

Summer Term:
- first 1/2 term: Rounders and Athletics
- second 1/2 term: Swimming and Athletics(2 weeks tennis coach)

Year 9

Year 9 students have 2 Physical Education lessons each week; 1 indoor lesson and 1 outdoor lesson in the Autumn and Spring Terms.

Autumn Term
- first 1/2 term: Hockey and Gymnastics
- second 1/2 term: Netball and HRF

Spring Term
- first 1/2 term: Football and Basketball
- second 1/2 term: Indoor Athletics and Outdoor Athletics

Summer Term: - first 1/2 term: Rounders and Athletics
- second 1/2 term: Swimming and Athletics(2 weeks tennis coach)

Physical Education - Boys

Year 7

Year 7 students have 2 Physical Education lessons each week; 1 indoor lesson and 1 outdoor lesson in the Autumn and Spring terms.

- first 1/2 term: Football and HRF
- second 1/2 term: Football and Gymnastics

Spring Term:
- first 1/2 term: Basketball and Hockey
- second 1/2 term: Basketball and Hockey

Summer Term:
- first 1/2 term: Tennis and Athletics
- second 1/2 term: Swimming and Athletics

Year 8

Key Stage 4 Core P.E.

Students are taught in half-year groups, which are determined, by maths groups X and Y with approximately 60 boys and girls in each half. 3 teachers are timetabled for each *****. Students are split into ability groups and students are offered the opportunity to study for the CCPR Junior Sports Leaders Award. Students who have proved to have low participation and motivation levels are offered activities that are best suited to them, Students are given the opportunity to study off-site.
