Drama
General overview & picture: Drama is a very popular choice at GCSE and A Level, with many students being accepted on to the most sought after HE courses. Our energetic team of teachers work within four fully equipped studios and a large performance space. Alongside learning about drama and theatre, students have many opportunities to showcase their talents to large audiences in our exam performances and our annual, whole school productions. Links with professional theatres such as The Royal Court, The Almeida and The Donmar Warehouse provide exciting opportunities for our students. Visiting companies explore thought provoking issues such as The Holocaust and Knife crime, and students' own films are showcased to parents at our Oscars afternoon in July. Recent theatre trips have included: Joseph, Blood Brothers, Woman in Black, 39 Steps, White Boy, Tin-Tin, The Lion King, Good Soul of Szechuan, Troilus and Cressida, to name but a few! Each year forty Year 13 students are offered a trip to New York to experience Broadway workshops and see productions like Wicked, Rent and The Producers. At all ages and stages, students develop confidence and vital social skills such as working with others to prepare them for life in and beyond school.
KS3 In years 7/8/9 the department covers many aspects of drama and theatre from Greek Theatre to Global Issues. Students will learn skills related to drama performance such as developing a character through voice and physicality, extending knowledge and understanding of issues through improvisation and developing vital social skills.
KS4 At GCSE level students experience a combination of practical drama, the study of scripted drama, script writing, devising for performance and attending live performances by professional companies. They will work with actors to develop their own skills. Students will perform their own play towards the end of the course.
Post 16 AQA Drama and Theatre Studies is a very popular choice. Students continue to develop their ability to work as part of a team performing extracts from plays as part of their exam as well as devised work written by them. Plays such as Blood Wedding and Oh What a Lovely War are studied for the written exam.
Extra Curricular Lunchtime and after school drama clubs play an important as here students can work on developing their improvisation and performance skills. Students volunteer to participate in learning about sound and lighting for productions as well as forming part of stage management and front-of -house teams. Students design tickets and posters for all our productions. Annual Trip to New York-Year 13 Regular Theatre visits for each year group Edinburgh Fringe Production -Year 12 Year 9 trip to see " And they came for me "
